Position Overview
A growing and established Connecticut engineering consulting firm is seeking an experienced Professional Engineer (PE) to join and help expand its traffic, transportation, civil/site, and infrastructure engineering capabilities.
This is a highly visible, client-facing opportunity for an engineer who combines strong technical capabilities with the ability to manage projects, coordinate with public agencies, mentor engineering staff, and represent the firm with clients and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have experience with some combination of traffic engineering, transportation design, roadway improvements, site/civil engineering, drainage, municipal infrastructure, traffic studies, intersection analysis, permitting, and construction contract documents.
Candidates with experience working with CTDOT, Connecticut municipalities, and other public agencies are especially encouraged to apply.
A Professional Engineer license is strongly preferred, particularly for candidates who can review, approve, sign, and seal engineering documents in Connecticut. Experienced EIT candidates who are close to obtaining their PE may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Traffic & Transportation Engineering
- Perform and oversee traffic engineering studies, traffic impact analyses, and intersection evaluations.
- Evaluate traffic operations, roadway capacity, safety, signalization, and intersection performance.
- Prepare traffic impact studies, transportation planning reports, technical memoranda, and engineering recommendations.
- Support roadway, corridor, intersection, traffic signal, and transportation improvement projects.
- Perform or oversee transportation modeling and operational analyses.
- Evaluate existing transportation conditions and recommend improvements based on traffic, safety, mobility, and infrastructure needs.
- Coordinate with CTDOT, municipalities, transportation agencies, developers, and public stakeholders.
- Participate in public meetings, agency meetings, and client presentations.
- Clearly explain technical traffic and transportation concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
Civil / Site Engineering Responsibilities
- Manage and support civil/site engineering projects from initial concept through design, permitting, bidding, and construction.
- Lead or review site layout, grading, drainage, utilities, roadway, parking, stormwater, and general land-development design.
- Prepare and oversee engineering plans, specifications, calculations, technical reports, permit applications, and construction documents.
- Review engineering drawings for technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Provide technical review and direction for the preparation of AutoCAD-based plans and specifications.
- Support public municipal, roadway, highway, infrastructure, and private site-development projects.
- Coordinate permitting and regulatory approvals with state and local agencies.
Project Management
- Manage multiple engineering projects, including scope, schedule, budget, staffing, quality, and client expectations.
- Maintain direct communication with clients and serve as a trusted technical resource throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develop and review project schedules and budgets.
- Monitor project financial performance.
- Prepare and review construction cost estimates.
- Coordinate subconsultants and other professional disciplines.
- Assist with contract preparation and project administration.
- Participate in project meetings and construction-phase coordination.
- Provide contract administration and engineering support during construction when required.
Leadership & Staff Development
- Lead multidisciplinary teams working on transportation, roadway, traffic, site/civil, drainage, utility, and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Provide technical guidance to project engineers, junior engineers, EITs, designers, and CAD staff.
- Review plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and construction documents prepared by project teams.
- Mentor junior staff and help strengthen their technical and professional development.
- Promote consistent engineering, drafting, documentation, and quality-control standards.
- Assist management in strengthening and expanding the firm's traffic, transportation, and civil engineering capabilities.
Business Development & Client Relations
Depending on experience, the successful candidate may also:
- Participate in proposal development and preparation.
- Attend project interviews and client presentations.
- Assist with contract negotiations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with municipalities, agencies, consultants, contractors, and private-sector clients.
- Identify opportunities for additional transportation, traffic, and civil engineering services.
- Support the continued growth of the firm's Connecticut transportation and infrastructure practice.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 5–20+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Strong experience in one or more of the following:
- Traffic engineering
- Transportation engineering
- Roadway design
- Traffic studies
- Intersection analysis
- Site/civil engineering
- Land development
- Drainage and stormwater
- Municipal infrastructure
- Transportation planning
- Strong understanding of engineering plans, specifications, calculations, and construction documents.
- Ability to communicate professionally with clients, agencies, municipalities, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
Professional Engineer License
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred.
Candidates who currently hold a Connecticut PE license, or who can obtain Connecticut licensure through reciprocity, are particularly desirable.
The senior-level individual selected for this role should ultimately have the ability and professional authority to review, approve, sign, and seal engineering plans and related documents as required.
Highly qualified EIT candidates approaching PE eligibility may also be considered for certain project-engineer-level opportunities.

Software
Experience with AutoCAD is beneficial.
AutoCAD Civil 3D experience is preferred but is not required for every candidate, particularly for senior engineers and project managers whose strengths are project leadership, technical review, client management, traffic engineering, or agency coordination.
